This week, meet Larissa May (aka Larz). She is the founder and executive director of  #HalfTheStory, a non-profit on a mission to empower the next generation’s relationship with social media, through advocacy, education, and providing access to resources for youth.

How did you end up in New York City?

I visited New York when I was 13 and immediately fell in love. I knew that was where I wanted to end up one day. When I was in college, I started a fashion blog and focused on building as many relationships as possible in the city so that I could make my way here after school. I spent two summers interning in NYC and moved here right after graduation. I quite literally packed my bags and drove in a Uhaul to NYC. At that time, I was working on my own social media consultancy and taking on video production projects. I remember moving in like it was yesterday. The only furniture I had in my apartment was a bed set from Craigs List and milk crates as my couches. That was the beginning of my adventure.

What is your proudest moment?

One of my proudest moments of this year was speaking at Sundance Film festival. It was an unexpected milestone that exceeded my wildest dreams. My panel was a live conversation with one of Facebook's earliest employees.

Is there another career path you've fantasized about having?

I've always dreamed of being a TV host or personality. It's not my main focus, but my hopes are that my journey today will lead me down that path at some point.

What's one unexpected thing that's helped you stay positive during this time?

Writing letters to loved ones. I try to take my connections offline and reflect on the relationships in my life. There's no better way to say thank you than a letter.

What does your WFH outfit look like?

Haha! Depends on the day. When I have virtual speaking engagements I dress like a normal day. Other days tend to be workout clothes so that I can remind myself to move my body!

Do you have any tips for staying creative/inspired while working from home?

First off, I think this time creates unexpected emotions and you have to give yourself grace. I find that there is a lot of content pushing productivity, and it's ok if you aren't waking up inspired everyday. I definitely am not, and I find it incredibly important to recognize that. In terms of staying inspired— I have a few tips.

1. Stick to a morning routine that works for you in this "new normal." Coffee, my daily stoic book, and a dance party are my staples.

2. When you're feeling low, call a friend. Social interaction of any type always lifts my mood and gets my creative juices flowing.

3. Dedicate a space for work. It's important to create boundaries and routines to stay inspired.
